The tower's height was practical as well as decorative: it signalled the start of the day's trade and let the market superintendent keep watch over the crowds below. The tower was built from Portland stone and is now Grade II* listed. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\"\u003eAfter the market's slaughterhouses closed in 1963, Islington Council turned the derelict 18-acre site into Caledonian Park in 1970.
