THE CLOCK TOWER — CALEDONIAN PARK, LONDON N7 A limited series of hand-pulled screen prints celebrating the Clock Tower in Caledonian Park, N7. Made for this year's Clocktower Festival (2026), each print reimagines the tower in a different bright, bold colour-way and signed by hand.
The History The Clock Tower was built in 1855, designed by architect James Bunstone Bunning, as the centrepiece of the Metropolitan Cattle Market — once one of London's largest livestock markets, replacing the old Smithfield market. The tower's height was practical as well as decorative: it signalled the start of the day's trade and let the market superintendent keep watch over the crowds below. The tower was built from Portland stone and is now Grade II* listed.
After the market's slaughterhouses closed in 1963, Islington Council turned the derelict 18-acre site into Caledonian Park in 1970. The park has its own political history too — in April 1834 the fields were the site of a demonstration of around 100,000 people in support of the Tolpuddle Martyrs, the agricultural labourers deported for forming a union.
